Synopsis

The involvement of the Metamora and surrounding community in the underground railroad is a significant, but mostly unknown piece of Central Illinois history. Future President Lincoln even defended local “conductors” from Metamora. Ultimately, the issue sharply pitted neighbor against neighbor and the opportunity to make money off capturing freedom seekers made Metamora a dangerous place. This short documentary film will preserve the stories of how important a part Metamora played in this tragic period in American history for future generations.
